Hiring a Wedding Coordinator - Questions to Ask

If you don't have time or don't want to plan your wedding or you're not getting married in your home town or if you just want your wedding to be professionally managed then you'll be in the market for a wedding coordinator. However, you can't just hire one without (a) letting them have your thoughts, likes, dislikes, colour scheme and so on and (b) without asking them some questions regarding how they go about doing their job of wedding coordinator. Here are the most important questions you should ask:

No. 1: How many weddings has the wedding coordinator planned? Does he or she have a portfolio of photographs that you can see and references from happy couples? This is important as you don't want an amateur planning your big day.

No. 2: Who will produce the master plan or your wedding? If the wedding planner wants you to do it then look elsewhere. They should be prepared to plan everything from the table decorations to the need or otherwise for a master of ceremonies.

No 3: Is the wedding planner familiar with the area in which you want to hold the wedding? This may seem irrelevant but if they have prior experience of possible venues, local florists, photographers, wedding car firms and so on, it will be a great advantage.

No 4: Assuming that the wedding coordinator is familiar with the area and has planned plenty of weddings here in the past, can they get you discounts from any of the businesses that they'll be dealing with? If they have favourites which they often use then there should be scope for some price reductions.

No. 5: Will the wedding planner deal exclusively with the vendors, including price negotiations, contract reviews and coordinating their time of arrival and setup activities on the day?

No. 6: Will the wedding coordinator create a detailed schedule so that everyone involved in the wedding in any way, including the bride and groom, will know where they should be and when and what they should be doing?

No. 7: Will the coordinator do some of the other tasks associated with the wedding such as ordering, addressing and mailing the invitations and booking the honeymoon?

No. 8: What will the wedding planner cost? The normal fee is around 10 - 15% of the total budget for the wedding. Will they be able to stick to that budget?

If you ask all these questions when interviewing your potential wedding coordinator, then you should end up with your wedding planned to perfection.
